WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 3, 2001

Washington D.C.'s Reagan National Airport will reopen tomorrow to limited commercial air traffic, President Bush announced on Tuesday.

The airport has been the only one still closed after September 11's terrorist attacks. Its close proximity to the U.S. Capitol, the White House and other federal buildings warranted extra security measures before it could be cleared to open, said the administration.

The news brought joy to the thousands of workers who have been put out of a job for nearly a month. It also was welcomed by members of Congress, who appreciate its convenience.

Service with start with shuttles to New York and Boston, and then gradually increase. Other precautions and changes, such as those to flight take-off and landing patterns, have been made.

In related airline news, Bush said he would support federalization of airport security. Previously, he had said some areas should remain private.
