TUESDAY, OCTOBER 23, 2001 Maybe it was a doomed relationship from the start but activist / actor / author Russell Means and the New Mexico Libertarian Party have parted ways. Means said campaign advisers told him to drop the party and run as an Independent to appeal to more voters. The party, however, says it wanted to drop Means anyway because he is a "loose cannon" and spouted views contrary to Libertarian philosophy, said state chairman Joseph Knight. An apparent schism had also developed over September 11's terrorist attacks. While the party put out a statement supporting President Bush's decision to attack Afghanistan, Means said the United States should instead "turn the other cheeck" and reach out to all people of all nations. Due to the switch in affiliation, Means has to get about 15,000 signatures to appear on the ballot. As a Libertarian he only needed around 3,000. Get the Story:
