WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 17, 2001

Former Montana Gov. Marc Racicot was set to be named a special representative in talks between the United States and Canada but last-minute concerns have temporarily derailed the nomination, a Canadian paper has reported.

The National Post said a senior Canadian official said assigning Racicot to the dispute over softwood lumber exports could slow them down because he would need time to get up to speed. The Post said the announcement had been set for Monday.

A Racicot spokesperson said no definitive decision on the appointment has been made.

Racicot, a virtual unknown outside Montana and among tribes in the Plains until he stepped to the forefront of last year's Presidential debacle, was rumored for consideration as Secretary of Interior and Attorney General. He eventually took a job at a Washington, D.C. law and lobbying firm, representing the record industry's fight against Napster.
