Jicarilla Apache join redistricting suit

TUESDAY, OCTOBER 16, 2001 A New Mexico judge has allowed the Jicarilla Apache Nation to join a lawsuit challenging the politicla redistricting of the state. Gov. Gary Johnson, a Republican, and Democrats have been at odds over the plan. He vetoted a proposal the Democrat-controlled Legislature approved earlier this month. District Court Judge James Hall now says he will give Johnson and Democrats until the third week of November to work out their differences before proceeding with lawsuits filed by Democrats and Hispanic activists. Separate lawsuits are pending in federal court. The Jicarilla Apache Nation is located in northern New Mexico near the Colorado border. Previously, the tribe has said it wants a House district where Indians are the majority. Get the Story:
