The $19.1 billion budget bill approved by a House-Senate committee last week includes funding for a number of Native projects.

Along with $2.8 billion for the Indian Health Service, $1.8 billion for Bureau of Indian Affairs programs and $545 million for tribal school construction, the bill includes $15 million to the Alaska Federation of Natives for alcohol and drug control programs. The program was requested by Sen. Ted Stevens, who has been criticized by Democrats for supporting Alaska Native projects.
