Pequot Tribe targeted by candidate

MONDAY, OCTOBER 1, 2001 Author Jeff Benedict on Saturday declared his candidacy for Connecticut's 2nd Congressionald district, promising to make the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation pay taxes and comply with federal labor laws. According to media accounts of his announcement, however, Benedict didn't make mention of his goal to terminate the tribe, a position he argued last year. But lest anyone think Benedict -- a Democrat whose sole claim to fame is a book claiming the Pequot Tribe is not a real Indian tribe -- is a one-issue man, he also says health care and national security will be on his platform. Benedict is one of seven Democrats currently seeking the nomination. A primary is expected in September of next year. Whoever gets the nod will go up against freshman Rob Simmons, a Republican. Simmons has been mediating talks between the Pequot Tribe and three towns over trust land and has generally received high marks for his role. But some of the residents who backed Simmons last year are now lining up behind Benedict. Other residents who are not happy with the talks may also abandon Simmons. Get the Story:
