New Navajo tax in effect

TUESDAY, APRIL 2, 2002 A 3 percent general sales tax went into effect on the Navajo Nation on Monday. The tax is being collected by businesses on the three-state reservation. A trust fund will distribute all the money to local chapter governments based on a two-part formula in which 50 percent is shared equally and the rest by population. The tax is expected to bring in $6 million in its first year. Get the Story:
