Seneca compact still debated

FRIDAY, MARCH 29, 2002

The Seneca Nation and the state of New York have yet to finalize negotiations on three casinos.

The State Legislature authorized Gov. George Pataki (R) to finalize the compacts. He believes a deal can be made soon but the tribe isn't in total agreement.

Under a proposal advanced last year, the tribe would open three off-reservation casino and one on-reservation. It has been suggested the Seneca-Cayuga Tribe of Oklahoma might step in for one of the facilities if the deal doesn't materialize soon.

In related New York casino news, the Stockbridge-Munsee Band of Mohicans of Wisconsin said it would use union labor to build a proposed $600 million casino in the Catskills. A casino planned by the St. Regis Mohawk / Akwesasne Mohawk Nation is required to use the union.
