FRIDAY, MARCH 22, 2002

The top aide to Rhode Island's Secretary of State has been fired for setting up meetings between the Narragansett Tribe and a casino company.

In a reversal of position, Secretary Edward Inman fired chief of staff Joseph DeLorenzo for the controversy. The tribe complained that pressure was being exerted to choose Harrah's Entertainment as a gaming partner.

When Boyd Gaming was chosen, the tribe was then told its casino proposal wouldn't make it through the state Legislature, according to tribal officials. DeLorenzo denied the charges and any wrongdoing.

Inman sided with his aide at first. But facing a brewing storm over the alleged shakedown, he told DeLorenzo to go.
