WEDNESDAY, MARCH 20, 2002

The town council of Kittery, Maine, is being asked to vote to oppose a casino proposed by two tribes.

Two council members want a non-binding referendum put before voters in June. The council will consider the issue at a meeting next Monday.

The Penobscot Nation and the Passamaquoddy Tribe have proposed to build a casino in Kittery, a popular shopping port within driving distance to Boston, Massachusetts, and Portland, Maine. A group called Casinos No! has formed to oppose the project
