Neb. gaming debated a second day

THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 21, 2002 Nebraska lawmakers on Wednesday again debated expanding gaming in the state with amendments offered to proposals on the table. Sen. DiAnna Schimek of Lincoln is keeping her constitutional amendment to allow gaming in Indian Country the same as prior years. Sen. Chris Beutler of Lincoln changed his proposal to expand the areas in which tribes could open casinos in "border zones." Beutler's amendment would allow five casinos within a two-mile radius of the states of Iowa, Kansas, South Dakota, Colorado and Missouri. Sen. Ray Janssen of Nickerson then amended this to allow slot machines at five non-Indian owned horse tracks. Iowa's casino owners -- who have spent thousands of dollars to lobby against expanded gaming in Nebraska -- are watching how the debate unfolds for fear of competition. Get the Story:
