Indian Country reaching out to tribe
TUESDAY, DECEMBER 18, 2001

Indian Country has been lending a helping hand to the Santee Sioux Tribe of Nebraska, whose tribal accounts and funds were depleted by the federal government over a casino battle.

The Morongo Band of Mission Indians and the Pechanga Band of Luiseno Indians are leading the effort to collect and send goods and donations to the tribe. The tribe's bank accounts were garnished because federal authorities tried to shut down a casino.

A federal judge has since ruled new games the tribe brought in to replace the contentious ones are legal.
