Calif. tribe worried about deal

THURSDAY, DECEMBER 13, 2001 A news report about the financial health of an energy company has worried the Torres-Martinez Desert Cahuilla Tribe of California and its deal to host a power plant. The rural tribe is planning to lease land to Calipine Corporation for 600-megawatt power. But after reading a New York Times article that compared the company to the failing and bankrupt Enron, a tribal manager sought assurances the deal was still solid.
