Narragansett Tribe plans casino pitch

WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 21, 2001

Having failed in its effort last year, the Narragansett Tribe of Rhode Island is planning to make another casino pitch to lawmakers sometime in 2002.

Due to the tribe's land claims settlement act, the state has criminal and civil jurisdiction on tribal land. The state does not prohibit Class III gaming but it must be approved by voters.

To do so, the issue has to be put on the ballot. State lawmakers have resisted doing so, although local communities have voiced support for a casino project.
