Neb. governor opposes slots

TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 20, 2001

Gov. Mike Johanns on Monday said he opposes efforts underway in his state to legalize video slot machines.

Johanns has opposed Class III gaming on the state's reservations. If the issue makes it to the ballots in November 2002, the state's four tribes would essentially be able to offer video slots.

The Santee Sioux Tribe was offering such games but was forced by the federal government to remove them. The tribe replaced the machines with new devices but prosecutors say they are Class III games and therefore not legal.
