In an editorial today, The Sioux Falls Argus Leader says the Lower Brule Sioux Tribe's land-into-trust application near a major interstate should be denied if it is determine the local economy will be hurt.

Attorney General Mark Barnett has been fighting the status for 91 acres of land north of Interstate 90. Gov. Bill Janklow has supported it, as long as no casino is planned, which the tribe has promised.

But beyond that, the paper says the tribe's plans for a truck stop could hurt the local economy. The paper says the interests of local officials should be considered.

The tribe has been trying to have the land taken into trust for nearly a decade.
