Pueblo fights casino settlement

TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 4, 2001

Pojoaque Pueblo in New Mexico last Friday asked the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals to reject a $91 million settlement other tribes made over casino payments owed the state.

The Pueblo says approving the settlement would hurt the tribe's legal standing against gaming compacts signed in 1997. The Pueblo believes the 16 percent slot machine sharing rate was illegal.

But if the Pueblo agrees to new compacts, the issue won't be addressed because a settlement the other tribes made with Attorney General Patricia Madrid requires full back payment.
