The Michigan State House on Wednesday narrowly defeated a bill that would have encouraged Gov. John Engler to negotiate a gaming compact with the Match-e-be-nash-she-wish Band of Pottawatomi.

The bill's sponsor, Rep. Larry DeVuyst, said he hopes the state will negotiate a compact because he believes the tribe's casino will be approved in federal court. When that happens, said DeVuyst, the state will have lost out on revenue sharing with the tribe.

The tribe was recognized last year.
