MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 24, 2001 The Mohegan Tribe of Connecticut will open formally its $1.1 billion expansion of the Mohegan Sun Casino tomorrow, although some events have been scaled back due to the terrorist attacks on America. Large crowds, however, are still expected to turn out for the opening. The day starts off bright and early at 9:30 AM with a ribbon-cutting by the tribe and casino managers. The expansion will add 115,000 square-feet to the existing casino. A 10,000-seat indoor arena is set to open in November while a hotel and convention center will be open by next spring. The tribe has hired 3,200 new employees for the new casino. More are expected hired for the other expansions. In an editorial, The Norwich Bulletin says it looks forward to the casino opening. The economic impact will be substantial, the paper says. In an editorial, Steven Slosberg of The New London Day says the tribe should have pulled its glitzy ad campaign in light of the terrorist attacks. The tribe did take an ad featuring the Great Pyramids in Egypt off the air but defends running the campaign. Get the Story:
