Wisconsin voters consider casinos

SEPTEMBER 18, 2000 Voters in Wisconsin have nine proposal for off-reservation casinos before them. Only two off-reservation casinos exist in the country. One is in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the other is in Washington state. The Lac du Flambeau Ojibwe and a partnership of three other Ojibwe tribes have proposed off-reservation casinos in various locales. The Ojibwe partnership in Hudswon was previously rejected by the Department of Interior in 1995. After a settlement and a Congressional investigation, their proposal is under consideration again. A total of 10 off-reservation casino requests have been received by the Interior since 1988. The St. Regis Mohawk of New York were approved earlier this year for one. Get the Story:
