FRIDAY, AUGUST 24, 2001

The Connecticut town of North Stonington held a public hearing a golf course and resort being proposed by the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation.

The proposal calls for an 18-hole course, a 35,000-square-foot club house, and eight guest housing structures on 914 acres of land. The land it not currently held in trust by the federal government.

Some archaeological resources are located on the site. They will be protected, says the tribe's archaeologist.

The property is located around the Lake of Isles, which is a state park. Access will still be allowed to the lake, said a tribal consultant.
