Panel clears Calif. gaming nominee

TUESDAY, AUGUST 21, 2001 Democrats on the the five-member Senate Rules Committee of the California Legislature voted to clear Gov. Gray Davis' nominee to head the Gambling Control Commission. Three Democrats approved John Hensley. But two Republicans abstained because Chairman Mark Macarro of the Pechanga Tribe opposes Hensley. Macarro says Hensley has worked to undermine the gaming compacts tribes have negotiated with the state. No other tribes have publicly opposed Hensley. Get the Story:
