Tribes oppose paying more gaming fees

Tribal and Indian gaming leaders on Wednesday told the Senate Indian Affairs Committee they oppose paying more fees to the National Indian Gaming Commission, the federal agency which regulates tribal casinos.

The NIGC's $8 million budget is based on fees assessed on gaming tribes. Depending on the size of operation, a tribe pays a certain percentage to NIGC.

But due to rapid growth, NIGC Chairman Montie Deer said the agency needs more money. Doubling the budget, which would mean increased tribal fees, is under consideration.

The Indian Affairs committee held its first in a series of oversight hearings on the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act (IGRA) of 1988.
