JULY 25, 2000 Lac Courte Oreilles Chairman Gaiashkibos walked out of an environmental impact hearing over a casino proposed by the tribe and two other Ojibwe bands in Wisconsin. Gaiashkibos called the hearing a "charade" and accused the Minnesota-Wisconsin Boundary Area Commission of being politically biased. The Commission will submit their testimony to the Department of Interior and say the casino would increase traffic, noise, and waste. Four other Wisconsin tribes also are questioning the casino. The four tribes paid for a study prepared by the Environmental Resource Group of Minneapolis, Minnesota, which claims the the Lac Courte Oreilles, Red Cliff, and Mole Lake Ojibwe bands, along with their Florida partner, have not adequately considered the environmental impact of the casino.
