The Seneca Nation of New York may delay a scheduled voter referendum because the tribe's gaming compact is being held up in the state Legislature, said a tribal official.

Without a final compact, there would be nothing for tribal voters to approve on August 7, said President Cyrus Schindler.

The tribe has come to an agreement with Governor George Pataki (R) on a seven-year gaming compact. But it needs to be finalized.

The state Senate has given Pataki the authority to complete negotiations but the Assembly is holding back, largely because of Democratic concerns with a compact.

Schindler met with Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, D-Manhattan, on Monday to discuss various issues, including unions on tribal land.
