JUNE 8, 2001 A number of Alaska Native corporations are questioning an attempt by the Kenai Peninsula Borough to tax Native-owned lands. The bourough's tax assessor last year discovered that Native corporations weren't paying property taxes on land they logged. As a result, the corporations might owe as much as $550,000 in property taxes last year. Under the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act, some activities on Native-owned land can be taxed.
