Alleged tribal leader says casino in works

JUNE 4, 2001

An anonymous man whom the Boston Globe says is a member of the Nipmuc Nation tribal council says the Massachusetts tribe is exploring casino plans in nearby Connecticut.

The alleged tribal councilor didn't want to be identified because former Chairman Bill Gould Sr., was removed for speaking publicly about casino plans in March. No one else confirmed the alleged plans, although the Globe says another anonymous tribal councilor confirmed talks about purchasing land in Connecticut were underway.

Legally and politically, opening a casino in Connecticut is easier than in Massachusetts, where attempts by the federally-recognized Gay Head Wampanoag Tribe have failed.

One band of the Nipmuc Nation was set to receive preliminary federal recognition. But the decision is on hold pending review by the Bush administration.
