The Connecticut Senate on Tuesday approved the state's two-year budget which includes an extra $2.5 million in casino money for impacted communities.

Ledyard, Montville, North Stonington and Preston each will receive an additional $250,000 from the state's $680 million surplus. Norwich will receive an additional $250,000 from another part of the state's budget.

Ledyard hosts the Foxwoods Resort Casino, owned by the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal nation, and Montville hosts the Mohegan Sun Casino, owned by the Mohegan Tribe. The other communities are located near the casinos.

Every municipality in Connecticut receives money from the state's share of the tribe's slot machine revenues. The formula is complex and includes need, leaving the communities nearest the casinos with less money than others.

The two tribes each contribute 25 percent of slot proceeds to the state, as required by their gaming compacts.

The budget goes to Governor John Rowland (R) for his signature. He is expected to sign it after the Assembly finishes its work.

In an editorial today, the Norwich Bulletin praises the additional money slated for Norwich.
