JUNE 27, 2000

William Old Chief, Chairman of the Blackfeet Tribe of Montana, addressed the Montana Economic Development Summit in traditional headdress and contemporary business suit. He said Montana and business leaders must work to include Indians in the state's economic development.

Senator Max Baucus sponsored the annual event, which drew over 1,000 participants at the University of Great Falls in Great Falls. He also said the state must work to include Indians in the building of Montana's economy.

Montana has 11 tribes on seven reservations. The Indian population is approximately 6 percent. The Little Shell Tribe recently received preliminary federal recognition from the Bureau of Indian Affairs.

Old Chief is up for re-election today.
