The Torres-Martinez Desert Cahuilla tribe will be hosting a $275 mlllion power plant that could serve up to 600,000 southern Californians. The Calpine Corporation of San Jose has finalized its plans with the tribe for a land lease and sale of water to the plant. The partnership marks the first economic venture of the isolated, non-gaming tribe.

A bill that would grant the tribe $14 million for lost land and the ability to buy land elsewhere for a casino has been introduced by Representative Mary Bono. The Cabazon Band of Mission Indians are opposing the bill, saying they weren't made aware of the tribe's casino plans.
