Conn. Indian proposals fail

JUNE 20, 2001

Three Indian related proposals failed to make the cut in a budget compromise reached by Connecticut Governor John Rowland (R) and the legislative leaders early this morning.

Instead of a $10 million pot, Impact aid for southeastern Connecticut communities was limited to $1 million. The communities had wanted to funnel slot machine revenues from the expansion of two tribal casinos to their budgets.

A proposal to create an Office of State-Tribal Relations was not approved. It would have been located in the Governor's office, who had expressed wavering views about taking on such a duty.

Finally, no money was approved to help Attorney General Richard Blumenthal fight federal recognition.
