Taxation ruling having effects
JUNE 11, 2001

The recent Supreme Court decision striking down taxation by tribes on non-Indian fee land has the Crow Tribe of Montana wondering about its next step.

The tribe has two taxation cases that it was appealing in the 9th Circuit. Those cases may be effectively overruled the Navajo Nation case, decided last month by a unanimous Court.

Although the ruling favored non-Indians, one business owner on the reservation says the whole issue has resulted in a loss of relationships with Crow tribal members. Putt Thompson has also spent $100,000 to fight the tribe's 4-percent resort tax.
