Drug, defense, and oil stock prices fell on Thursday with the news that Senator Jim Jeffords of Vermont will be leaving the Republican party.

Industry executives, meanwhile, scrambled to figure out how the shift in power in the Senate to Democrats will affect them. Banking, health care, organized labor, unions, and energy industries are among the many who are weighing the effects of the change.
