Officials in Mississippi are opposing a land-into-trust application filed by the Jena Choctaw Tribe of Louisiana.

The tribe has filed an application for 12 parcels of land, including some acreage in northeast Mississippi. A tribal spokesperson said there are no plans to locate a casino there but state officials are already opposing any such proposal.

The Jena Tribe received federal recognition through the Bureau of Indian Affairs regulatory process in 1994. The decision was finalized in 1995.
