MAY 23, 2000 The Narragansett Tribe of Rhode Island particpated in a debate Monday evening about their proposal for a casino in West Warwick. The tribe wants the issue to appear on a November referendum, but the General Assembly of the state legislature must first agree to put it on the November ballot. A University of Rhode Island study reported that 87 percent polled want to see the issue on the upcoming ballot. As part of their settlement over their land claims, the tribe is bound to follow state laws concerning gambling. State law requires voter approval on all gambling issues. Get the Story:
