MAY 16, 2001 The St. Regis Mohawk Tribe and its gaming partner on Tuesday presented their plans to build a $500 million off-reservation casino in Sullivan County. The partners are promising to bring jobs to the economically depressed Catskills region. They want to develop a 750-room hotel, a 300,000-square-foot casino, a 5,200-car parking area and a 2000-seat theater. The tribe has to have the land placed into trust before the project can proceed. The tribe and its previous partner, Catskills Development Corp., had received approval a little over a year ago for a casino in another location. The tribe then abruptly dropped those plans and joined up with Park Place Entertainment, the largest gaming company in the world. Other tribes are seeking to develop casinos in the region.
