The Eastern Pequot tribe deny they have a business deal with the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation.

Anti-federal recognition politicians in Connecticut offer as proof a 1996 letter sent from the chairman of the Eastern Pequot tribe to the Kenneth Reels, chairman of the Mashantucket Pequot. The letter offers the Mashantucket a share in the Eastern Pequot's management company and a stake in future business deals in exchange for political support.

The Mashantucket have endorsed the Easten Pequot's application for federal recognition.

Both the Easten Pequot and the Paucatuck Eastern Pequot received preliminary federal recognition in March. The towns of North Stonington, Preston, and Ledyard are actively opposing their approval.

Select quotes by Nicholas H. Mullane, North Stonington first selectman:
"They are all in cahoots. They always have been."
"It shows that this has always been a financial deal. They use the line that they’re interested in Indian culture and heritage."
"But really, it’s all a business deal. They say, ‘Hey, we’ll give you a piece of our casino if you’ll support us.’"
