APRIL 23, 2001

The Mohegan Tribe and the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation have joined freshman Congressman Rob Simmons (R-Conn.) and others in opposing a bridge and bypass project designed to alleviate traffic in and around tribes' casinos.

Communities in southeastern Connecticut have opposed the plan. It calls for construction of a bypass road and a new Mohegan-Pequot bridge.

The state Department of Transportation has been moving forward with the proposal over local objections.
