City wants Indian casino

Anxious to cash in on money from lucrative tribal casinos in Connecticut, Bridgeport city officials have endorsed the Golden Hill Paugussett Indian tribe and their bid for federal recognition. The tribe, which is recognized by the state, and the city have been traditional legal enemies. In 1993, the tribe filed a land claims suit which angered city officials and residents. The city has now passed a resolution supporting the tribe's efforts. Not everyone is supportive--the mayor has withheld his endorsement and a local researcher working to fight recognition says the Paugussett are "not a tribe." A preliminary BIA decision is expected in July. Source: Support building for tribal casino in Bridgeport (AP 4/21)
