Pueblo signs crime deal with county

APRIL 12, 2001 Sandia Pueblo has agreed to pay $100,000 to the Bernalillo County District Attorney's Office to prosecute crimes committed by non-Indians at its new casino and other businesses. Tribes don't have criminal jurisdiction over non-Indians on reservations. The federal government is supposed to prosecute crimes committed by non-Indians. Sandia Governor Stuwart Paisano says the agreement is aimed at relieving the strain on federal authorties for small crimes. The money the tribe is paying to the County will provide for a new attorney and a new support staff member. Get the Story:
