APRIL 12, 2001

The New York Supreme Court in Albany on Wednesday ruled the state's gaming compacts with tribes illegal because they were negotiated without the consent of the Legislature.

The ruling would affect Class III gaming at the casinos of the Oneida Nation and the St. Regis Mohawk. The ruling doesn't immediately close the casinos, however.

The current compacts were negotiated by Governor George Pataki and former Governor Mario Cuomo. The Attorney General's office plans an appeal.

Similar legal challenges have resulted in other states requiring ratification of gaming compacts by the Legislature.
