MARCH 5, 2001

The success of the welfare to work program of the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation is told by the story of Maria Merced and husband Luis Berrios, who began work at the tribe's casino almost two years ago.

Having moved to Connecticut from Puerto Rico, they began participating in the the tribe's program almost two years ago. Since then, they have gotten off welfare, taken advantage of improving their English skills, and purchased a car.

Tribal chairman Kenneth Reels is a supporter of the program, having grown up on public assistance.
