Mohawk Tribe slims down casino

MARCH 27, 2001

A spokesperson for the St. Regis Mohawk Tribe said the tribe has scaled back its plans for an off-reservation casino because they don't want their on-site hotel to take away too much business from other ones.

Rowena General said the tribe wants to build a 700-room hotel, rather than the 2,000-room originally proposed. Since the Catskills region is economically depressed, she said the tribe wants to make sure the casino has the support of the local business community.

The tribe has to get approval from the Bureau of Indian Affairs to take the 66 acres of land into trust. The tribe had previously gotten such approval, but with a different partner and at a different location.

Since they changed partners to Park Place, the largest gaming company in the world, they have to submit a new application. Their previous application took more than 3 years to gain approval.

The tribe on Monday also said it will put off its plans for another casino in Greene County to work on this proposal, which would be in Sullivan County.
