Nipmuc chairman removed from duties

MARCH 26, 2001 The tribal council of the Nipmuc Nation of Massachusetts, whose so-far successful bid for federal recognition is being reviewed by the Bush administration, on Thursday voted 7-0 to oust Chairman Bill Gould Sr. The council voted him out because he reportedly called a local radio station and said the tribe could seek to open a casino in Massachusetts, Connecticut, or Rhode Island. The council didn't tell The Associated Press why they removed him but Gould says they felt his comments were "detrimental" to the tribe. Get the Story:
