Casino draws interest criticism

MARCH 22, 2001 Officials in New London and throughout the state had varying opinions on Wednesday regarding the potential for a tribal casinos to be located in the town. Town officials said the proposal is interesting and is a starting point for a partnership with the Eastern Pequot Tribe. The tribe has to receive final federal recognition, take land into trust, and negotiate a compact before a casino deal could go forward, though. State lawmakers on the other hand say another casino is not what southeastern Connecticut needs. They had other plans for the Adm. Harold E. Shear State Pier, which the tribe's financial backer says is their top spot for development. Get the Story:
