MARCH 16, 2001

California Governor Gray Davis on Thursday signed an executive order calling on the state Gambling Control Commission to oversee how slot machines are distributed to tribal casinos.

The order might help resolve the question of the upper limit on slot machines at casinos. Davis has suggested 45,206 while a legislative analyst says it is 113,000. Tribal estimates, according to one tribal attorney, fall around 60,000-70,000.
