N.M. tribes: $1B to state

MARCH 15, 2001

The New Mexico Gaming Control Board says the state's gaming tribes have given $1 billion in slot machine money thanks to a 16 percent revenue sharing rate tribes have protested since it was instituted in 1997.

This year alone, the Board projects the tribes will contribute $529 million to the state. Expansions at tribal casinos are the reason, the Board says.

After a political stalemate over the issue and a lawsuit filed by Attorney General Patricia Madrid, the State Legislature on Monday approved a new compact which caps the revenue sharing rate a 8 percent. The Department of Interior would have to approve the compact before it becomes effective.
