MARCH 1, 2001

The Senate leadership committee of the Idaho Legislature on Wednesday approved an emergency bill requiring lawmakers to approve any gaming compact negotiated by Governor Dirk Kempthorn and tribes.

Lobbyists for tribes say the proposal is not clear. Its proponents say it will still allow the Governor to negotiate but requires the Legislature's ratification.

Other states, including New Mexico, have similar arrangements.
