Problem gambling study would be delayed

FEBRUARY 9, 2001

Connecticut Governor John G. Rowland on Thursday defended a $550,000 cut from the state's budget that would go to a study of problem gambling.

Rowland said the study isn't really needed because people already know the effects of gambling. But state gambling addiction officials say the study is needed because the problem is huge.

Last done in 1996, the study was supposed to be completed this year. Rowland has said it should be done every 10 years instead.
