Gaming tribes seek greater input

Wisconsin's 11 gaming tribes are seeking greater input in how money they contribute to the state is spent and have outlined their budget request in an agenda for officials.

The tribes contribute 3 percent of their earnings to the state sending $48 million that needs to be allocated in the 2001-2003 budget. The Governor is supposed to make an effort to direct that money to benefit tribes but the Legislature doesn't have to implement the suggestions.

Some tribes have been concerned about how the money is spent. The Oneida Tribe has been withholding its payments and faces termination and non-renewal of their compact when it comes up for renewal in 2003.

The tribes said they want money allocated for tourism promotion, economic development, education, natural resources, law enforcement, and other areas.
